LangChain Embedding Integrations Still Lack Multimodal Support

LangChain's embedding model integrations do not yet support multimodal embeddings, a gap as the ecosystem moves toward multi-format AI pipelines.

LangChain's embedding model integrations page confirms the framework does not currently support multimodal embeddings. The documentation covers integrations for text-based embedding models, which convert sentences, paragraphs, and other text into fixed-length numeric vectors for semantic search and retrieval.

The absence is notable as multimodal embeddings โ€” models that jointly encode text, images, and other formats into a shared vector space โ€” are increasingly central to RAG architectures handling diverse content types. Providers like OpenAI, Google, and Cohere have shipped multimodal or vision-aware embedding models over the past year, and competing orchestration frameworks have begun adding support. For teams building retrieval pipelines that need to index and search across images, PDFs with figures, or mixed-media documents, the gap means relying on custom integrations or alternative tooling outside LangChain's standard embedding interface.
