Microsoft Unifies AutoGen and Semantic Kernel into Agent Framework

Microsoft launched Agent Framework, merging AutoGen's agent abstractions with Semantic Kernel's enterprise tooling.

Microsoft has released Agent Framework, a unified platform that combines AutoGen's agent programming model with Semantic Kernel's enterprise capabilities. The framework brings together session-based state management, type safety, middleware, and telemetry under a single SDK, while adding graph-based workflows for explicit multi-agent orchestration.

The merger resolves what had been a confusing overlap between two Microsoft-backed open-source projects targeting the same agentic AI space. For enterprise teams already invested in either AutoGen or Semantic Kernel, Agent Framework offers a consolidated path forward with a single dependency and consistent APIs. The graph-based orchestration layer is notable — it gives developers explicit control over how multiple agents coordinate, rather than relying on purely autonomous delegation. As agentic architectures move from prototypes toward production workloads, opinionated tooling for state management, observability, and structured workflows addresses a gap that most teams have been filling with custom glue code.
