OpenAI Expands Codex Desktop with Computer Use, Image Generation, and 90+ Plugins

OpenAI's Codex desktop app gains computer use on macOS, image generation, 90+ plugins, and persistent task scheduling today.

OpenAI announced a major expansion of the Codex desktop app on April 16, rolling out computer use on macOS, image generation via gpt-image-1.5, support for 90+ plugins, and persistent task scheduling. The updates were announced on X.

For builders and power users, the additions mark a significant shift in scope. Computer use lets Codex interact with any Mac app by seeing, clicking, and typing — running in the background without taking over the screen. The plugin library covers docs, project management, code review, creative tools, and deployments. Automations now run in persistent threads that preserve original context, enabling Codex to resume long-running tasks like landing open PRs or ongoing project follow-ups. Image generation with gpt-image-1.5 brings frontend designs, mockups, and game assets into the same workflow. All features are included with a ChatGPT account — no API key required.
