Three Vendors, Three Bets: AI's Strategic Divergence
OpenAI launched a $10B enterprise consulting arm. Google reimagined the mouse pointer. Anthropic refreshed Claude Code. The big three's strategies just split three ways — and Q1 funding shows they own the field.
The big AI vendors all moved in the same week, but in three different directions. OpenAI announced an enterprise deployment arm and a cyber-defense product. Google rethought the mouse pointer. Anthropic shipped a Claude Code desktop refresh. With three vendors capturing 67.3% of Q1 2026 AI funding per PitchBook, these aren't side projects — they're territorial claims on how AI gets consumed.
OpenAI: services on top of models
OpenAI launched the Deployment Company on May 11, 2026, an in-house forward-deployed engineering arm built around its acquisition of applied-AI consulting firm Tomoro. CRO Denise Dresser told CNBC that enterprise AI adoption is "at a tipping point" and that the new structure will let OpenAI "build a product service" at speed and scale. The same day, OpenAI also unveiled Daybreak, a security-focused product combining Codex and partner integrations to automate detection, validation, and response.
The pattern is clear: OpenAI is buying its way into vertical workflows. Deployment Company FDEs embed inside customer organizations to connect OpenAI models to internal data, tools, and business processes. That's a consulting model, not a SaaS one — closer to Palantir's playbook than to Salesforce's. It also reframes how OpenAI competes with system integrators: not as a model vendor they resell, but as a direct alternative.
Google: rethinking the interface
Google DeepMind took a different angle, introducing an AI-enabled mouse pointer powered by Gemini that captures visual and semantic context around the cursor. Two experimental demos are live in Google AI Studio as of May 2026: image editing and map navigation, both driven by pointing and speaking. Per DeepMind's announcement, "for decades, your mouse only tracked where you were pointing. AI helps it understand what you're pointing at."
This is an interaction-design bet, not a model launch. While OpenAI sells services, Google is investing in the substrate that everyone else builds on. If the pointer ships in ChromeOS or Android, it pre-empts a wave of third-party "AI cursor" startups by making Gemini ambient at the OS layer.
Anthropic: holding the developer surface
Anthropic stayed focused on tooling. The May 2026 Claude Code desktop refresh added a session sidebar, drag-and-drop workspace, integrated terminal, file editor, and SSH support on Mac. That's a quiet move next to OpenAI's $10 billion announcement, but the maturing open-source alternatives — Aider, OpenHands, Cline — suggest Anthropic knows it has to defend its developer surface against unbundling.
For builders, the question is which vendor's center of gravity matches your work. If you ship enterprise integrations, the FDE model is genuinely new — and if it works, every consultancy in your procurement deck gets compressed. If you're a designer, the Gemini pointer is worth ten minutes in AI Studio this week. If you're a developer already shipping with Claude Code, the refresh is incremental but real.
The bottom line: Three vendors, three bets — pick the one whose roadmap most overlaps with where your work actually happens, because the funding data says these are the three roadmaps that will matter through 2026.
