OpenAI Brings Codex to ChatGPT Mobile App in Preview

OpenAI previews Codex in the ChatGPT mobile app on iOS and Android, letting users steer coding sessions remotely.

OpenAI has launched a preview of Codex inside the ChatGPT mobile app, now available on iOS and Android in all supported regions, with Windows support coming later. The update lets users start new work, review outputs, steer execution, and approve next steps from their phone while Codex continues running on a laptop, Mac mini, or remote development machine.

The addition closes a meaningful gap: Codex, OpenAI's agentic coding system, previously required a desktop environment to initiate and manage tasks. Mobile access means developers can monitor and direct long-running coding jobs without being at their workstation — reviewing agent output, approving next steps, or redirecting mid-session. OpenAI announced the feature on X, noting it was directly requested by users. The architecture keeps compute on the development machine while routing control through the mobile client, sidestepping mobile hardware constraints while extending the agent's reach to wherever the developer happens to be.
