OpenAI Codex Gains Chrome Extension for Browser-Native Automation
OpenAI's Codex agent now runs directly in Chrome on macOS and Windows, handling browser tasks across tabs in the background.
OpenAI has released a Chrome extension for Codex, its AI coding and task-automation agent, available today on macOS and Windows. Users install the plugin from within the Codex app to give the agent direct access to the browser.
The extension lets Codex operate across multiple tabs simultaneously in the background, without taking over the visible browser session. It targets tasks that require a logged-in browser context — debugging web application flows, reading dashboards, conducting research, or performing data entry in tools like CRMs — by writing and executing code to navigate pages and complete interactions. Codex selects its execution path based on the task: it routes through an existing plugin when one can handle the job, switches to Chrome when authenticated site access is needed, and can combine both approaches within a single workflow. The announcement was made by OpenAI on X.
